Wizz Air to expand Kyiv base
In early January Wizz Air has announced an expansion plan for its base in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. The expansion project for this largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe includes the establishment of a second Airbus A320 aircraft in Kyiv and the opening of two new routes from Kyiv, to Copenhagen and Nuremberg, by the end of the summer season. The planned expansion will increase the number of seats on flights from the Kyiv base to 750,000, a 64% growth year-on-year for 2017.
The second A320 will also allow the carrier to increase traffic on board already existing routes–to Budapest, Dortmund, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, and Bratislava–as well as to increase the frequency of flights to those destinations.
The airline has operated a base in Ukraine’s capital since June 2015. It carried over 350,000 passengers on its Kyiv routes in January-November 2016.
Wizz Air reached record numbers of growth in 2016, increasing its passenger throughput to 23 million, up 19%. The airline added 9 aircraft to its fleet in last year. Currently it operates 74 A320s and A321s, and operates out of 25 cities in 13 countries.
