Wizz Air launches flights between Budapest, St. Petersburg

Wizz Air also flies to Moscow's Vnukovo airport The carrier is planning to bring the frequency on the route to four flights per week by next spring (Budapest Airport)

Hungarian LCC Wizz Air launched flights between its home base in Budapest and Russia’s St. Petersburg on August 27. The carrier will be initially running a twice-weekly service on the route, with a view to bring the frequency up to four flights per week next spring.

There were no air services between Budapest and St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo airport for the past three years, after Russian carrier UTair Aviation stopped flying the route.

Wizz Air also flies between Budapest and Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport. Russian flag carrier Aeroflot operates a service between the Hungarian capital city and Moscow’s Sheremetyevo. In light of increased demand, the Russian airline will launch a third daily flight on the route, boosting its weekly two-way capacity to over 7,000 seats. The Budapest airport management hopes Aeroflot’s increased frequency will help develop passenger transit from Hungary to Asian destinations via Russia.

The Hungarian airline operates flights to other post-Soviet destinations: to Kyiv’s Zhulyany airport in Ukraine, to Azerbaijan’s Baku, and to Georgia’s Kutaisi.

Budapest is also connected with Kyiv’s Boryspil airport by Ukraine International Airlines, with the Belarusian ccapittal Minsk by Belavia, and with Latvia’s Riga by airBaltic.
