United Engine Corporation gets new chief designer

Russia’s United Engine Corporation has appointed Yury Shmotin as the corporation’s deputy general director and new chief designer. He now replaces UEC’s former chief designer, Valery Geykin. Until recently Shmotin held similar position at NPO Saturn, an UEC subsidiary. He participated there in development and certification of SaM146 turbofan engine, built by NPO Saturn jointly with Safran Aircraft Engines for Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft.

According to UEC’s general director Alexander Artyukhov, the corporation is counting on Shmotin to reform its existing research and development system, and implement a new product strategy.

Shmotin’s assignments and responsibilities will include development of UEC’s design, scientific and technological potential and coordination of all of UEC’s design bureaus.

Yury Shmotin, who received a degree in aviation, started his career in companies, that later on formed UEC, in 1995. He came to NPO Saturn in 2001 and two years later was appointed to deputy chief designer. He became the company’s chief designer in late 2010.
