Traffic growth at airports of Kyrgyzstan gains momentum
Kyrgyzstan’s airport holding Manas International Airport (MIA, manages five international and six regional airports around the country) served a total of 3.586 million passengers in 2017, up 16.3% on the previous results. Domestic traffic reached 1.318 million (up 31%), whereas international traffic climbed to 2.269 million (up 9.4% year-on-year).
Manas airport, which serves the country’s capital city Bishkek, welcomed the largest number of travelers at 2.165 million (up 18%). Of these, 656,300 passengers traveled domestically and the remaining 1.509 million were international passengers.
The second largest airport in the country was Osh with 1.410 million passengers. It demonstrated the highest year-on-year growth rate at 37%, with 752,200 international and 657,500 domestic passengers. As part of the drive to accommodate more international traffic, which was partially due to the launch of flights between Osh and Zhukovsky airport outside Moscow, the airport expanded its terminal area from 5,000 to 7,160 square meters last year.
Issyk-Kul airport served 29% passengers more year-on-year at 11,700 (3,900 domestic and 7,800 international).
