Traffic at Georgian airports keeps growing The growth rate was highest at Kutaisi in the first five months of the year (Kutaisi Airport)

Traffic growth through Georgia’s airports has recently increased. According to the Georgian Civil Aviation Agency, in January-May 2017 the international airports of Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi and the regional airports of Mestia and Ambrolauri together served 46.96% more passengers than in the same period last year.

A total of 1.22 million passengers traveled through all of Georgia’s airports in the first five months of the year.

All of the country’s international airports demonstrated an increase in traffic. The growth rate was particularly high at Kutaisi, which served 143,546 passengers or up 94.37% on the same period last year. The airport had been posting consistently higher passenger numbers for some time after Hungarian LCC Wizz Air’s decision to set up a base there back in September 2016.

Tbilisi, Georgia’s main air gateway, saw its traffic increase by 42.96% in the first five months of the year to slightly over one million passengers.

Batumi, the third largest airport in Georgia, saw the slowest growth at 33.22% year-on-year with 72,516 passengers.

Princess Tamara Airport serving the city of Mestia has processed 2,343 passengers since the beginning of the year, or 95.58% up year-on-year. Another regional airport, Ambrolauri, only became operational in January and has served just 324 passengers since.

For comparison, in Q1 2017 traffic through Tbilisi grew by 41.2% year-on-year to 528,200 passengers; through Kutaisi, by 81.3% to 68,400; through Batumi, by 14.2% to 23,700; through Mestia, by a whopping 107.8% to over 1,400.

The Georgian aviation authority also reports that from January to May, 14,398 tons of cargo was processed by the country’s airports, up 48.47% year-on-year.

Last year passenger traffic in Georgia grew 25.7% to 2.84 million year-on-year. Traffic was up 48.3% at Kutaisi and up 22% at Tbilisi; Mestia traffic was down 5.62%.
