Passenger traffic at Russian airports in January-May 2024 increased by 6.7% year-on-year to 78.8 million. Of these, the lion’s share was served on domestic routes – 61.5 million (an increase of 3.3%), with 17.2 million people (+21.5% y-on-y) flying on international routes, reported Rosaviatsia, Russian aviation authority.

Passenger traffic at Moscow’s airports (Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo) in five months increased by 7.1% to 27.7 million, with 10.1 million passengers served on international routes (+17.8%), and 17.6 million – domestically (+1.8%).

The top 5 federal districts in terms of passenger traffic growth at airports were as follows: Central Federal District (excluding three Moscow’s airports) – 710,000 passengers (+12.3%);

Far Eastern Federal District – 4.3 million (+11.1%);

Siberian Federal District – 10.2 million (+9.4%);

Ural Federal District – 7.8 million (+9.3%);

North-Western Federal District – 10.8 million (+7.1%).

Alexander Fridlyand, professor at State Research Institute of Civil Aviation said: “Data on the dynamics of traffic growth at the airports of the Russian Federation for 5 months confirm the recent data from airlines with regards of the continuation of stable and intensive growth of air transport observed since October 2023. It is worth noting May dynamics on international routes – the growth rate exceeds 20%. There is an accelerated development of direct flights through regional centers, bypassing Moscow; the growth rates of transportation through the Siberian, Urals and Far Eastern federal districts are overtaking similar growth rates in the Moscow air hub”.
