Second terminal planned for Zhukovsky airport

Work will begin this year to plan a second terminal for Zhukovsky airport outside Moscow, Evgeny Solodilin, deputy director of the airport operator Ramport Aero, has told Russian Aviation Insider. The decision was made by the Zhukovsky stakeholders: Rostec Corporation and Lithuanian holding company Avia Solutions Group.

“Next year we are planning to consider the possibility of building the second terminal,” Solodilin said.”We also need to build a large number of other infrastructure elements, such as aprons. We are currently completing preliminary design work on a new apron for 14 aircraft, and will then file an application for a government expert assessment.”

The development strategy for Zhukovsky implies three stages.The first objective, which has been reached, was to restore and upgrade the airside infrstructure of Ramenskoye airfield and build a passenger terminal with a total floor area of 17,600 square meters. The second and third stages will see the terminal gradually expanded, first by 30,000 square meters in 2018 and then by a further 13,000 square meters by 2020.

According to Solodilin, the second stage will bring the airport’s annual throughput capacity to 6 million or even 7 million passengers. Once the entire project is complete, the total area of both terminals will reach 60,000 square meters and its throughput capacity, 12 million passengers annually.

In other plans, an international cargo terminal, with an area of 10,000 square meters and capable of handling 120,000 t of freight per year, is to be launched at Zhukovsky this October, to be completed in Q1 2018. The existing cargo terminal handles exclusively domestic freights. It wil be put out of service and demolished once the new facility has been put into operation, and the space thus freed will be used for another apron.

Solodilin declined to disclose the new cargo terminal’s future customers. According to earlier reports, there is an agreement in place between Ramport Aero and a new freight operator, Sky Gates Airlines. There are also several existing clients for freight operations into and out of Zhukovsky, including Irkut Corporation, Alrosa, and the Russian Emergencies Ministry.

According to Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, in 2016 Zhukovsky welcomed 43,900 passengers and handled 392,300 tons of cargo.
