S7 Technics ramps up heavy maintenance for CFM56 engines at unique Russian facility
The production site at Sheremetyevo airport is the only one of its kind in the country

In a significant move for Russia’s aviation sector, MRO provider S7 Technics has brought online the second phase of the nation’s sole dedicated facility for heavy maintenance of CFM56 series engines.
The new production line, located at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, is set to substantially enhance domestic maintenance capabilities for the workhorse powerplants of the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families, which form the backbone of Russian medium-haul fleets.
This expansion marks a crucial step towards self-sufficiency. Following the imposition of international sanctions in March 2022, Russian carriers lost the ability to send these engines to overseas service centers for major overhauls. The launch of the enhanced Sheremetyevo site is projected to slash engine repair turnaround times by a factor of 1.5 and extend the operational life of the national fleet by an estimated 8-10 years, according to company statements.
The project traces its origins to a 2021 initiative by S7 Technics to establish comprehensive heavy maintenance for Western-made engines and auxiliary power units (APUs). Beyond the CFM56 series, the facility also performs repairs on Honeywell APUs.
Since commencing operations in 2022, the plant has already overhauled 380 engines. Of these, 63 supported S7 Airlines’ own fleet, while 317 were completed for other Russian carriers. This output represents approximately 40% of all CFM56 engines currently in service within Russia on Boeing 737 and A320 aircraft, underscoring the facility’s pivotal role in maintaining national fleet airworthiness.
