S7 Airlines stays in Top-3, despite GTF challenges

Russia's largest private airline carried 12.9 mln passengers in 2024 :: S7 Airlines

Russia’s largest privately-owned carrier S7 Airlines (Sibir) served 12.9 million passengers in 2024, giving it the third line in the ranks of the country’s major airlines.

Number one, two and four are state-run Aeroflot group’s carriers. The flagship Aeroflot increased its traffic to 30.1 million passengers (+19.3%). The low-cost carrier Pobeda served 13.7 million passengers (+5.0%). Rossiaya Airlines transported 11.5 million (+26.8%).

S7 Airlines’ traffic saw 19% decrease. This wasn’t an unexpected result – the airline is experiencing challenges in maintaining the airworthiness of its GTF-powered Airbus A320neo family aircraft, being the only operator of the version in the sanctions-hit country.

The acquisition of three Airbus A321ceos last summer helped the airline to maintain its capacity at an acceptable level.

Last year, S7 Airlines added five new flights to its regional route network: from Irkutsk to Phuket, Shanghai and Guangzhou, and from Vladivostok to Beijing and Shanghai.

Novosibirsk (Tolmachevo), S7’s historic base, remains its largest hub, accounting for half of its passenger traffic, the airline said.

At the same time, the airline continues to develop flights from Moscow. In the past year, flights from Domodedovo to Ust-Kamenogorsk and Kemerovo were resumed, and the frequency of flights to Dubai, Ashgabat, Istanbul, Yakutsk and Neryungri was increased.

In total, S7 operated almost 100,000 flights (both domestic and international) in 2024.

To meet the growing demand for premium services and seeing increase in the number of corporate passengers, the airline reconfigured a number of aircraft with business class seats and launched a dedicated loyalty program for business.
