November this year marked the first time that Russian airlines’ cumulative traffic grew on international as well as domestic routes. The country’s operators carried 2.4 million passengers on international flights, 12.1% more than in November last year, according to Federal Air Transport Agency.

This is a significant improvement over previous months. In October international traffic slid 1.8%, in September it was down 15.4% year-on-year, and in August, down 25.6%.

Between Russia and CIS countries traffic grew 18.6% to 539,600 passengers. The upward trend resumed only in October after a long decline.Flights to destinations outside the CIS generated traffic of 1.901 million passengers, up 10.4%.

Domestic traffic grew 18.4% to 4.118 million passengers. Local lines also showed positive dynamics, up 7.4% to 161,400 passengers.

Cumulative November traffic grew 16%. However, the surge is largely a statistical phenomenon linked to Transaero’s exit from the market exactly a year ago. Thus the positive results in November did not effect the general results of 11 months. In the period from January to November Russian airlines’ international traffic declined 21% to 20.707 million passengers. The decline was evident on both the flights to CIS countries (-15.4%) and to long-haul international destination (-22.4%). Domestic traffic during the 11 months grew just 6.7%.

From January to November Russian airlines carried 81.905 million passengers, down 5.4%. This figure is likely to have given ground to Russia’s Transport minister Maxim Sokolov’s conclusion that the traffic at the end of the year will show a 5% decrease. According to Interfax newswire, the minister explained that the decline will be caused by a plunge in international traffic numbers, whereas domestic traffic will grow 8%.
