Polar Airlines signs for 200 TVS-2DTS aircraft

Polar Airlines signs for 200 TVS-2DTS aircraft TVS-2DTS aircraft will start flying on regional routes in Yakutia (Polar Airlines)

Polar Airlines and Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant (UUAP, part of Russian Helicopters holding) have signed a contract for delivery of TVS-2DTS, the light composite single-engine turboprop airplane, based on Antonov An-2 design. The deal, which is part of a large-scale project to develop local air connections in Buryatiya and Yakutia regions, was announced by Russian Helicopters.

The first deliveries are scheduled for 2021. Within the timeframe between 2021 and 2025 UUAP plans to deliver “no less than 200 aircraft for the needs of regional aviation,” the official announcement reads.

The production of the aircraft is expected to be launched by 2019. It is also not excluded that Russia’s State Transport Leasing Corporation (GTLK) may join in the contract.

Russian Helicopters’ CEO Andrey Boginskiy explained that the holding is counting on federal authorities to provide financial support for preparation for the serial production. He also asked the Ministry of Industry and Trade to support the remaining R&D works and future certification, and Ministry of Transport along with regional administrations to allocate subsidies for organizing helicopter service in the regions.

The first TVS-2DTS prototype made several demonstration flights at Polar Airlines’ premises in Yakutia in March. The aircraft will be upgraded for operations in the Nothern regions. Polar Airlines will provide recommendations for the required aircraft modifications. TVS-2DTS is expected to be used for passenger transportation, as well as medevac, fire-fighting missions and for agricultural purposes.

In Russia, the aircraft will start flying on regional routes in Yakutia, then spread to Baikal region, north-west of Siberia and the Far East. Mongolian carrier Hunnu Air has also expressed interest in the aircraft. It is planning to acquire six aircraft of the type.

TVS-2DTS received Honeywell TPE331-12UAN engine and the new avionics that allows to operate  round-o-clock in any weather conditions. It has a speed of up to 350 km/h.
