Passenger traffic through Domodedovo increases in January

Passenger traffic through Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport reached 2.089 million passengers in January, up 2.1% from the same month of 2016.
Results of the first month are in line with the trend, which established at the end of the last year, when a prolonged downturn caused by the economic crisis and exit of the airport’s largest carrier, Transaero, gave way to a moderate growth.
One of the growth drivers is likely to be the recent strengthening of Russia’s national currency, which spurred demand for international leisure travel.
International traffic through Domodedovo picked up 4.3% in January, reaching 878,000 passengers. Dubai, Antalya, Dusseldorf, Punta Cana and Sanya proved most popular international destinations last month.
Domestic segment grew 0.6% to 1.211 million passengers.
The upward trend is good news for Domodedovo after two years of decline. At the end of 2016 the airport reported a 6.6% yaer-on-year decrease, and 2015 was 7.7% below 2014 level. In 2014 the airport posted 7.2% improvement of its operational results.
