In 2016 Perm Motors, a part of United Engine Corporation, assembled three conforming test prototypes of PD-14 turbofan engine. The manufacturer confirmed they had been built with serial production technology. Sixth conforming engine is being assembled right now, the company said.

The 12th PD-14 prototype is at kit preparation stage. Its assembly is scheduled to be completed in early 2017. Perm Motors expects to build four engines next year, two of which will be used for certification flight tests of Russia’s next generation narrowbody, the Irkut MC-21.

Another test-bench for PD-14 will be operational by the third quarter of next year.

Each of the engine’s test prototypes is designated for testing specific performance parameters. Sixth prototype of the PD-14 is currently undergoing endurance testing with imitation of routine flight cycle. Engine number 7, after successfully completing the first stage of flight testing on the wing of Il-76 flying laboratory, was dismantled from the wing, disassembled at Perm Motors facility, thorough inspected by its Aviadvigatel design bureau, also a part of UEC, and reassembled. This engine has recently commenced the second stage of flight testing.

The engine number nine passed engineering tests on the open-air test bench at NPO Saturn and demonstrated steady performance at crosswind conditions. Acoustic testing and thrust reverser testing were done at the same facility. The prototype number 10 is undergoing altitude tests at Russia’s CIAM Central Institute for Aviation Motors.

Perm Motors are currently completing preparation for launching the new engine into serial production. The company has also elaborated a schedule for introduction of PD-14 after-sale support system. “So Perm Motors are ready to start serial production of the new engine on schedule. It continues to master the manufacturing, fine-tune the production technology and introduce cutting-edge equipment,” the manufacturer reported.
