In January 2017, the cumulative passenger traffic of Ukrainian carriers increased 57.5% compared to the same month last year. It reached the total of 676,500 passengers, the country’s State Aviation Service reported. Notably, by January 2016 the country’s commercial aviation market had recovered from the preceding slide, so the recent improvement can’t be called purely statistical. The industry’s growth in 2016 was 31.2%.

As throughout the last year, the growth in January was mainly generated by the international traffic. It increased by 60.6%, to 608,200 passengers. In absolute figures, the international traffic increased by 229,500 passengers, whereas domestic traffic only grew by 17,500 passengers to 68,300, which is 33.4% above January 2016.

Passenger traffic through Ukrainian airports demonstrated a more moderate growth rate – 41.8% to 1.060 million passengers. As with the airlines, the international segment outperformed domestic traffic – 43.3% to 921,000 international passengers (up 278,300 passengers to last January’s results) against 32.6% growth to 139,000 passengers on domestic lines.

Only two Ukrainian airports have reported on their individual results for January – Kyiv’s Zhulyany and Lviv. Zhulyany improved its results by 101.8% to 108,200 passengers, out of which number 103,200 passengers traveled internationally and the remaining 5,000 to domestic destination.

Lviv airport’s traffic grew 55.2% to 58,500 passengers. International segment grew faster at 79% to 46,200 passengers, whereas domestic traffic increased 21% to 12,200 passengers.
