Angara Airlines Antonov crash-lands in Nizhneangarsk, Russia

Two cockpit crew members are killed and the aircraft is destroyed by fire after it crashed into airport infrastructure beyond the runway threshold (Russia’s Investigative Committee)

All 43 passengers and two crew members survived when an Angara Airlines Antonov An-24RV turboprop aircraft, operating Flight 2G 200 en-route between Ulan-Ude and Nizhneangarsk, crash landed and ploughed into airport infrastructure.

After an emergency landing at Nizhneangarsk, the Antonov overran the runway for about 100 metres before crashing into airport infrastructure beyond the threshold. The collision and the resultant blaze killed the captain and the flight engineer.

All 43 passengers and the remaining two crew members managed to evacuate safely, with 14 people taken to hospital for assistance. The fire that engulfed the aircraft after the collision completely destroyed the Antonov.

It is the second fatal airport crash landing in Russia in two months.

According to Russia’s aviation body Rosaviatsiya, the Antonov flight deck crew declared ‘left engine failure’ technical malfunctions in flight and announced their intention to perform an emergency landing. The aircraft’s flight data recorders (FDRs) have been recovered and have been handed over to the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) for investigations.

The An-24RV turboprop, with registration RA-47366, made its first flight in 1978 and, after an overhaul, has been operated by Angara Airlines since 2013.

Headquartered at Irkutsk, Angara Airlines is a regional carrier operating within the Siberian district. Its mixed fleet of 34 aircraft includes seven An-24s, three An-26 turboprops and five newer generation An-148s.
